Get to know our Staff and Pets

The Ark Veterinary Hospital is fully equipped with lots of friendly staff — but we will always treat you and your pet as individuals. Our veterinarians, vet nurses, and staff are welcoming, kind and appropriately qualified. You won’t find a vet who knows more and cares more than we do!

Veterinarian Staff

Our veterinary team provides expert care across a wide range of species, from beloved pets to native wildlife and livestock. With diverse specialities including internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, and community and conservation work, they combine skill, compassion, and curiosity to ensure every patient receives attentive, professional, and rewarding care.

Stephen founded The Ark Animal Hospital in 2006 after years working in the Northern Territory. A Territorian at heart, he is deeply committed to animal welfare, conservation, education, and community dog-health programs with Indigenous communities.

Dr Joel Cuthbert

Originally from Wolverhampton, UK, Joel joined The Ark in 2021 after completing his DVM at Murdoch University. A wildlife enthusiast, he enjoys the challenge of a diverse caseload and has special interests in internal medicine and pathology. He advocates for greyhound welfare through GRANT and shares his life with a rescue greyhound, enjoying sport, puzzles, and beach walks in his spare time.

Hannah first joined The Ark as an undergraduate from Townsville and returned after graduating to join the team. A longtime wildlife carer, she was drawn to the clinic’s diverse native species. Inspired by early animal welfare work, she is committed to community medicine. After adopting a cat, she developed a strong interest in feline medicine and dermatology, bringing compassion and curiosity to every patient.

Dr Amélie Panche

Originally from New Caledonia, Amelie grew up on a rural property with animals, riding horses and exploring outdoors. She graduated as a vet in Brisbane in 2023 and soon joined The Ark in Darwin. She enjoys the variety of cases, from pets to wildlife, and the chance to keep learning, bringing warmth, curiosity, and compassion to the team.

Dr Nick Davies

BSc DVM ( Melbourne University)
Nick grew up around a mix of animals, inspiring his lifelong love of creatures. After earning his veterinary degree at Melbourne University in 2021, he joined The Ark in Darwin. He has special interests in internal medicine, fish, and birds, enjoys the diverse caseload and remote community work, and shares his life with a rescue dog while regularly fostering others in need.

Our veterinary nursing team brings extensive experience, skill, and compassion to every patient, supporting pets, wildlife, and livestock across all areas of care. From emergency and critical care to surgery, fear-free handling, and hands-on patient support, they ensure animals—and their owners—receive professional, attentive, and compassionate care at every visit.

Cert III of Animal Studies, Certificate IV Veterinary Nursing
Mel has been an integral part of the nursing team since 2016, with extensive experience in animal welfare and rehoming in Darwin and Sydney. After completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, she became one of only a few Registered Veterinary Nurses in the NT. Deeply committed to ongoing education, she also balances motherhood and rural life, sharing her property with livestock, two dogs, a turtle, and a bearded dragon.

Matilda has a special passion for emergency and critical care, She thrives when things get fast paced, ready to jump in and care for critically unwell animals. She loves being able to be there for livestock, wildlife and pets (and their people) when they need it most.

Practice Manager

Katie

Cert II and Cert III Animal Studies, Cert IV Veterinary Nursing, Certificate of Leadership and Management, Certificate of Practice Management (Crampton Consulting group).
Katie joined the team in 2025 as Practice Manager, with over 20 years’ experience in the veterinary industry. Starting as a Veterinary Nurse in 2000, she has worked in small and large animal practices across Australia, managed a clinic and animal welfare NGO in Cambodia, and supported remote animal health programs with AMMRIC. She stays closely connected to patient care in busy hospital settings.

Our resident bird enthusiast, Hayley combines her skills and knowledge with a deep passion for avian care. She devotes much of her spare time to rehabilitating injured birds and wildlife.

Teale brings extensive experience from her time at a wildlife hospital on the Sunshine Coast. Deeply passionate about wildlife, she also dedicates her spare time to caring for injured and orphaned animals.

Perry has a strong focus on surgery and instrument preparation, bringing precision and care to every procedure. She ensures everything runs seamlessly behind the scenes and has a soft spot for reptiles and other quirky creatures.

Gypsy is a passionate vet nurse who often travels to remote and Indigenous communities with our team, providing care for animals and support for their owners. She loves the variety of nursing, meeting and working with people and animals from all walks of life.

Our administration and reception team ensures every client and patient is welcomed and supported, managing appointments, enquiries, and clinic operations with professionalism, warmth, and attention to detail. They help keep the clinic running smoothly while supporting the team and fostering high standards of care for pets and wildlife.

Born and bred in Darwin, Sandra loves life surrounded by animals. She cares for a small cattle herd and retired stock horses, and enjoys meeting the diverse pets and wildlife visiting The Ark while continually learning on the job.

Laksa is confident, clever, and delightfully sassy. She knows exactly what she wants and always makes her presence known. Not big on cuddles but full of personality, she rules her quiet corners with slow blinks and perfectly timed stares. 💛

Small in size but big in heart, Tet is utterly devoted to his beloved owner ( one of our Vets) and never far from their side. Often seen padding through the halls, his gentle, loyal nature brings calm and comfort to everyone he meets.
